Mezcales Cuish is made up of rural producers that are dedicated to the production and commercialization of traditional Oaxacan mezcal from different regions and agave varieties.

A brilliant new batch of the most benchmark of all agave, this Espadín comes to us from the remote town of San Vicente Coatlan, Oaxaca. Deep into the southern municipality of Ejutla, this indigenous Zapotec community has struggled with violence in recent years, making it unusual to see commercial mezcal successfully sourced from within the region.

Maestro mezcalero Teodomiro Santiago has been working with mezcal for over 40 years, and he is one of the lead organizers of Oaxaca’s Maestros del Mezcal civic association. Like much of nearby Miahuatlán, Teodomiro uses a copper pot still with a condenser attachment (“refrescadera”)—sometimes also known as an “Ejutla-style still”—which allows for additional reflux on each distillation run. While many in the region choose to distill to high proof just once using this still type, Teodomiro makes two passes, yielding a concentrated and dense spirit which is both thrilling and illuminating to experience.

Fresh and soft, with notes of sundried tomato and wheat bran on the nose, followed by plush fruit, dusty corn husks, epazote, fluffy starch, and gentle mole or milk chocolate on the palate’s finish. Beyond easy.
